Be Astonished O Heavens, Be Amazed!

Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
Jeremiah 2:12-13 ESV

I heard a message this morning on how Christians are supposed to be, as children of the most high, doing astonishing things. Our savior did things that were utterly amazing. He healed the sick, created bread and wine, walked on water, and raised men from the dead. Yet he also said,
"Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
John 14:12 ESV

So what are these greater works? This will be a stretch, so bear with me. I find it interesting that God calls the heavens to witness the utterly shocking event of Israel’s treachery. By turning away from their strong support and grasping after worthless alliances, Israel demonstrated to the heavens how totally depraved man had become.

Yet, Paul tells us in Ephesians that one of the roles of the church today is to demonstrate the manifold wisdom of God to the angelic beings. In other words, now that Jesus has redeemed a people and poured out his Spirit upon them, we are to do just the opposite of what was happening in Jeremiah’s day.

So, when the people were amazed, even astonished, at the miracles Jesus was doing and Jesus says that greater works will be done by those who believe, it could be that part of the greater works involves those things which will astonish the a heavens. Satan can do miracles. Manipulating this physical world is not all that astounding to the heavens. However, when men who are subject to sin become born from above and begin to do the works of righteousness, that is, when men begin to love their wives and wives begin to obey their husbands, the heavenly beings become amazed.

Be astonished o heavens; be amazed at the manifold wisdom of God demonstrated by the bride of Christ today! God has caused his people to flock to the living waters and we are being satisfied.
