Shaking the Heavens and the Earth

In his sermon this week, Dominic Aquila preached on Haggai 2:1-9. One concept that really stood out for me was God’s declaration that he was going to shake the heavens and the earth again in the near future. Dominic explained that shaking was a symbol of God’s judgment. Just as God shook down Egypt, so he was going to shake the world and then all the nations would come to God’s temple.

It struck me as he spoke that the earthquake that happened at the crucifixion of Christ was a sign of the judgment that was taking place on the cross. Yet this was not just the earth being shaken. Heaven itself, in the person of the God-man Jesus Christ was being shaken to the core.

This is one of the great mysteries. That the pure heavens should be shaken to redeem sinful earth is mind-boggling.
