In October 1898, George Barker Stevens wrote the preface for his new paraphrase of Paul’s epistles. The preface is a wonderful piece of Bible translation history for a number of reasons, but I’m going to focus on a couple issues in it that directly confront our Bible translation culture today. This is a short preface, less than four very small pages (only six paragraphs), so I’ll try to take up the issues I see in each paragraph over the next week or so.
Today I am merely posting the preface for any that wish to read it for themselves first. Click on the image to get a slightly larger version to read.
