Remodeling the Garage, Part One

Preston is out here this week working on our garage. He’s framing in a bedroom, a playroom and a mudroom. Today he’s working on walling up the old garage door.

Looks like fun...especially when you have great help. Is it common in C. Springs to turn garage space into living space? I'm pretty sure here in the frozen North it is generally just too cold to build right on top of a garage slap so people avoid it. Also, we need a place to store that snowblower...though you've had way more snow than we can even imagine this winter.

Hey C Timm,

No, it's not common and with all the hail dammage around here we are really taking our chances on this. With five children we needed the space so we're throwing caution to the wind.

As for cement slab, it's not really that big of an issue. It's very dry here and the frost doesn't seem to be too big of an issue.

One thing that is quite strange is the "floating walls" that are required here when framing above cement slabs. I'll post some pictures when I get some good ones to show what it looks like.

Interesting you mention the floating walls because I noticed that in the pictures. I thought maybe it was just Preston's tried and true way of framing over cement.
